1. What is PVD coating technology?

Answer: PVD is the abbreviation of Physical Vapor Deposition in English, which means "physical vapor deposition" in Chinese. It refers to the preparation technology of thin film deposited on the plated work piece by physical method under vacuum conditions.

2. What are the categories of PVD technology? What kind of PVD coating machines are there?

Answer: PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) technology is mainly divided into three categories: vacuum evaporation coating, vacuum sputtering coating and vacuum ion coating. Compared with the three categories of PVD technology, the corresponding vacuum plating equipment also includes vacuum evaporation plating machine, vacuum sputtering plating machine and vacuum ion plating machine. In recent ten years, the development of vacuum ion plating technology is the fastest, and it has become one of the most advanced surface treatment methods.

3. What is the principle of PVD coating?

Answer: Physical vapor deposition is a physical vapor phase reaction growth method. The deposition process is under the condition of vacuum or low gas discharge. The material source of the coating is solid material. After evaporation or sputtering, a new solid material coating is formed on the surface of the parts, which is completely different from the performance of the base material.

4. What are the advantages of PVD coating compared to traditional chemical plating (water plating)?

Answer: The similarity between PVD coating and traditional electroless plating is that both of them belong to the category of surface treatment. Both of them cover one material on the surface of another material in a certain way.

The difference between the two is that the bonding force between the PVD coating and the workpiece surface is greater, the hardness of the coating is higher, the wear resistance and corrosion resistance are better, and the performance of the coating is more stable; the variety of coatings can be plated by PVD coating is wider, and the colors of various coatings can be plated are more beautiful; the PVD coating will not produce toxic or polluting substances.

5. Can PVD coating replace electroless plating?

Answer: At present, PVD coating can't replace electroless plating. Besides direct PVD coating on the surface of stainless steel, electroless plating of Cr (chromium) is necessary before PVD coating on many other materials (such as zinc alloy, copper, iron, etc.). PVD coating is mainly used in some high-grade hardware products. For those low-cost hardware products, chemical plating is usually used instead of PVD coating.

6. What are the characteristics of PVD coating?

Answer: The coatings deposited by PVD technology have the characteristics of high hardness, high wear resistance (low friction coefficient), good corrosion resistance and chemical stability, and the service life of the coatings is longer. At the same time, the coatings can greatly improve the decorative performance of the workpiece.

7. What substrate can PVD be plated on?

Answer: PVD film can be directly plated on stainless steel, cemented carbide, titanium alloy, ceramics and other surfaces, zinc alloy, copper, iron and other die castings should be electroless chromium plating first, then suitable for PVD plating.

8. What kinds of PVD coatings can be deposited?

Answer: PVD coating technology is an environmentally friendly surface treatment method which can really obtain micron-scale coating without pollution. It can prepare various single metal films (such as aluminum, titanium, zirconium, chromium, etc.), nitride films (TiN [titanium gold], ZrN [zirconium gold], CrN, TiAlN), carbide films (TiC, TiCN), and oxide films (such as titanium, etc.).

9. What is the thickness of PVD coating?

Answer: The thickness of PVD coating is micron, which is thinner, usually 0.1-5 micron. The thickness of decorative coating is generally 0.1-2 micron. Therefore, the physical and chemical properties of the workpiece surface can be improved almost without affecting the original size of the workpiece, and the workpiece size can be maintained basically unchanged without further processing after plating.

10. What color can PVD film be plated?

Answer: The color of the film we can make at present is dark golden, light golden, coffee, bronze, grey, black, grey, black, seven-color, blue, purple and so on. The color can be controlled by controlling the related parameters in the coating process. After the coating is finished, the color value can be measured by relevant instruments, so that the color can be quantified to determine whether the plated color meets the requirements.
